Pudding Basins - Plastic or Earthenware?

by Jane Lang on 28 Nov 2001 09:37 am
I have recently had a rayburn fitted, and want to make a large batch of christmas puddings. I have several plastic basins and a large heavy bottomed stainless steel stockpot to put them in. The pudding basins say 'Not for oven use' on the bottom. However, range cookery books suggest you transfer the pot containing the puddings to the oven to steam. Will my plastic basins melt if I do this? Any recommendations?

Dear Jane

Provided you have water half way up the puddings and start the whole thing off for 30-45 mins on the top first, the pan can be transferred to an Aga simmering oven or a low Rayburn oven (idling temp) for several hours to finish off cooking. The plastic will be fine.
